Alexander Technique

What happens in a lesson?

In a lesson I will gently guide you through simple every day movements such as standing, sitting, bending and walking so that you can learn by experience (the only way!) to trust that 'less is more' when it comes to moving.
Sometimes we chat, sometimes we focus on what is happening in the moment - eventually you learn to do both at once!
Usually, I will spend some time working with you whilst you lie on a firm table with your knees bent and your head supported.

Most people report that they feel calmer, lighter and more at ease in their body by the end of a lesson.

What type of training have you been through?

From 1987-1990 I completed my three year, full-time training to become a qualified Alexander Technique Teacher. I am a member of STAT (Society of Teachers of the Alexander Technique) and am fully insured and police-checked.

How much do lessons cost?

  • The first introductory session: £60

  • Individually lessons: £40

  • A block of 5 lessons cost £190

  • A block of 10 lessons costs £360

How many lessons will I need?

This is a bit like asking ‘how long does it take to learn a musical instrument’! It is a difficult question to answer as it depends what you want from the lessons and the problems you arrive with.

As a general rule of thumb, most people will have a good grounding in the Technique after about 25-30 lessons and can go away with an ability to integrate the basic principles of the Technique into their day-to-day living.

You could expect to have got something useful in as little as six lessons (a scientific study on Alexander Technique and back pain published in the BMJ showed that significant improvement was made in this time).

We can decide together in the first session how many will be right for you.

What do I need to wear?

Normal everyday clothing is worn during lessons. I usually ask that you wear loose-fitting trousers as it makes it easier to work - especially when we do sessions lying on my teaching table.

Restorative Conversations

What happens in a Restorative Conversation session?

These sessions support you to first of all restore connection with yourself so that you can then be present to others. They can be held alone (one-to-one), with someone else or a combination of both over a series of sessions.

How many sessions will I need?

This will depend entirely on your circumstances. If the conversation is between more than one person, I recommend the minimum number to be three 90 minute sessions but you may need many more than this

What qualifications and training do you have?

I am a certified Nonviolent Communication (NVC) trainer with the Centre for NVC www.cnvc.org

I am an accredited mediator with the Peaceful Solutions Centre in London.

How much do the sessions cost?

For two people

This will include two individual sessions and three joint sessions

For three or more people

Conflict Resolution - Mediation

What is the difference between Restorative Conversations and Conflict Resolution?

The purpose of mediation/conflict resolution is to support two or more people to find their own mutually agreeable resolution. There will nearly always be two or more people involved in the process.

The purpose of Restorative Conversations is to restore connection. This can be with yourself and/or with others - so that relations can continue with more harmony, connection and enjoyment. In reality, the two purposes (restoring connection and finding a mutually agreeable resolution) often overlap.

What qualifications and training do you have?

I am an OCN accredited mediator -trained with the Peaceful Solutions Centre in London www.peacefulsolutions.co.uk
I am also a certified Nonviolent Communication (NVC) trainer - I am certified by the Centre for NVC www.cnvc.org
